Mining expert J G Ghiselin argues Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin are at the start of a major zinc and lead boom. He cites Wisconsin already producing and predicts deeper, better ore with proper development, calling for conservative, businesslike mining and skilled operators to build the region into the world’s largest zinc and lead zone.
The Big Tom Syndicate has unloaded its fourth drill and will place it at work on the Sherard farm two miles north of the city. The site previously hosted Sherill and Corneilson, with a strong showing of jack and drybone on the premises.
Michael Dempsey, a longtime Galena riverman and former steamboat second mate, died Monday at age 65 after a yearlong battle with dropsy and heart trouble. He was unmarried and survived by his sister Ellen. He had retired to mining and lived with his sister, with funeral services held Wednesday afternoon at St. Michael's Catholic Church.
A rumor claimed a mine director near Platteville absconded with about 25000 of company funds. An investigation found no verification as a Platteville attorney reported the officer was seen but no proof of wrongdoing, and the Dubuque Times report was unfounded.
Freeport friends learn that Patrick Grace a former Freeporter and conductor on a Denger and Rio Grande train escaped injury in a major Colorado wreck last week while riding in the last car. The note confirms Grace survived the crash without harm.
Miss Myrtle Renwick of Warren elected county superintendent of schools by the Jo Daviess board to fill the vacancy caused by J. W. Wilcox. At 29 she becomes the first woman to hold the post in the country, winning 11 of 21 ballots amid five candidates including J. Hart R. F. Evans H. P. Caverly and Roscoe Spensley. Renwick will resign from Clarendia Indiana duties to begin in Jo Daviess immediately.
John Ehrler 50, long-time community resident, died suddenly after a noon meal while near Bowden's bridge at his brother Michael Ehrler’s farm. He recently moved to the city from Elizabeth area and planned a new home. Survived by wife, sister Mrs John Tobin and brothers Frank, William, and Michael. Funeral Thursday at 9 from Michael Ehrler’s East Galena home to St Matthew's Lutheran. burial Greenwood.
Prof Edwards of Snow Hill College in Snow Hill Alabama argues at South Presbyterian Church that education and ownership among black Americans will solve the race problem. He cites gains in land ownership, schools, and teachers, and calls for compulsory schooling and better living conditions as essential steps.
Mr. Peters of Chicago, contracted to decorate the church interior, is in the city and will personally supervise the work. Upon completion, the church is expected to boast one of the most artistic finishes in town. Also mentions Tailor made suits as affordable spring garments, plus an appeal to visit Coatsworth's Dry Goods Store for styles.
John Murphy a 66 year old Northwestern railroad employee died suddenly while unloading rock ballast 3 miles north of Cobb. He had worked over twenty years as a section foreman and died of heart failure on the job. his body was sent to Cobb for burial.
Diphtheria has broken out in Me nominee township with six to seven cases reported and no deaths. The quarantine is strict at Supervisor Kieffer’s home where several children are affected. Early exposure led to multiple cases. authorities expect containment with continued frigid quarantine and hope no new developments arise.
Prohibitionists nominated Rev. C. L. Logan of Elizabeth for congress at Dixon Friday. Logan, a Methodist minister, had been nominated for state senator at the recent convention. It was found Senator McKenzie was a holdover, creating no vacancy. Logan's career spans Missouri birth, Wisconsin and Illinois church work, and pastorships in Mt. Carroll, Sterling, Chicago, Bishop California, and Elizabeth since 1902. E. D. Herbert named to congressional committee.
