J H Lewis is impressed with mine developments north and east of Cuba City. Baxter, Wicklow, Gritty Six and other mines push production with ore shipments, 30 workers, 80 acre leases, and a 50 ton mill. A new gas powered plant may boost efficiency while rail spur plans promise lower costs.
The sixth gold medal contest under W C T U Stephenson and Jo Daviess counties was held last night at First United Brethren church with YP C U cooperation. Miss Ema Fry of Freeport won. Miss Vasperia of Pearl City was second and Miss Bueher of Winslow third. Judges were Professors McGill and Lunt and Dr J B Gift. The event praised contestants for spirited effort.
W L McLaughlin of United Mining & Constructing Co Mineral Point Wis announced a major ore discovery on the Montfort land. Drill results show 65 to 94 feet of ore with 40 feet of disseminated ore in a nearby hole. He expects shafts and mining to begin soon, needing more outside capital for full development and believes this area could become a world leading lead and zinc district.
Lieut. Gen. John M. Schofield U.S.A retired and former head of the U S army died at St. Augustine Florida Sunday evening from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was with his wife and young daughter at his passing and will be buried at Arlington. He was born in Gerry Chautauqua County New York on September 29 1881 and came to Freeport in 1843 before entering West Point. Galena March 6 1906 notice of East Galena Democratic caucus set for March 17 at 2 pm for township officer nominations and other business. Erve Claver, once a local resident, plans to enter the hotel business at Pt Aykins Wis in the near future.
A well known local man visited Dubuque and drank heavily in a saloon. He attempted to “clean out” the town and was arrested. Lodged in the city jail overnight, he faced a police magistrate who fined him for disorderly conduct. Unable to pay, he was sentenced to thirty days.
Drillers on the Hudson land near the city found ten feet of jack at 103 to 113 feet depth, augmenting a prior lead ore find. The jack, described as excellent quality, supports plans to sink shafts and install mining machinery under Fred Avery’s supervision for immediate development.
Jo Daviess county board of supervisors set a special session for March 20 to fill the vacancy caused by J W Wilcox death. Aspiring candidates include Roscoe Spensley and Beloit College graduate Prof O E K Taylor though salary realities may deter Taylor. Fred Seubert is also mentioned as a candidate. Spensley, a long-time resident and Beloit graduate, is favored. Also notes cattle receipts at Chicago market and local arrivals by William Neihls.
News in Joplin Missouri reports zinc prices at 51 per ton top rate with assay values 44 to 48 per ton for 60 zinc. Lead sells up to 73 per ton for high grade at Webb City and Carterville, medium grades 6.50. Compared with last year, lead up 16, zinc down 3.50. Zinc shipments up 13 100 pounds while lead shipments fall 69 220 pounds. Total ore value down 24 885 dollars though output remains high with shipments near 300 tons, largest in six weeks. Details list zinc and lead shipments by company and land leases for week ending March 3 1906.
IS PLEASED WITH DAKOTA J. W. Martin of Bridgewater 5. D. went to South Dakota to farm last year. He reports mild winter, good stock, and rising land values as emigrants flood in. He notes two to three hundred acres could make one rich in a few years. The piece encourages family health and a gentle remedy priced at 35 cents for children.
Emil Gustafson testified yesterday before Circuit Clerk Lake in Rockford for the $25,000 damage suit of J. E. Richardson against Black Hawk Mining Co of Elizabeth. Gustafson, departing for Victoria, B C, witnessed the 85 foot fall that caused Richardson’s injuries and plaster cast, and his deposition will be sent to Jo Daviess courts.
A horse owned by Hawkins and driven by Cleaver Collins fell into a four foot deep sewer at the north end of the Illinois Central depot at noon today. Nearby men freed the animal after it became trapped as the earth gave way. The horse was severely injured and may be badly hurt. Witnesses blame the defective sewer cover.
Dr. Hoffman of Rockford, a Spanish American War veteran, arrived in Galena and found faces he knew from Cuba. He had served as a private in Company M, UO K, and a reunion with old comrades rekindled memories of battles and camp life during the Cuban campaign.
The Darlington Democrat endorses Hon. T. L. Cleary of Platteville for the Fifth Judicial Circuit bench noting his qualifications include a strong judicial temperament, honesty, solid legal knowledge, broad attorney connections, and independence immune to big interests, qualities that would earn respect from attorneys and trust from the people.
G Meyers buys the late James Rowe estate on Seminary hill comprising a dwelling and lot. Frank Ganshirt and Wachter of Guilford buy a portable engine for their Gilford saw mill. The funeral of the Fiege child will be held at 2 40 p m tomorrow from South Main Street residence with Rev Crissman officiating, Greenwood burial.
Pink eye spreads rapidly through Galena with multiple cases reported. The illness is highly contagious but not deadly, causing red eyes, soreness, and temporary vision impairment for about a week to ten days. Residents blame warm wet weather for the surge and expect conditions to worsen until dry, warm weather returns in weeks or months.
Mr John McHugh a prominent Galena resident and former high school teacher will move with his family to Omaha soon seeking better health. He sold his home to Richard Nichol of West Galena and plans travel when weather allows. He hopes the Nebraska trip will improve his feeble health after many years in teaching.
A campaign to place a memorial window in the First Presbyterian church honors the late Rev. David Clark who died in St. Louis. Volunteers from both church and nonmembers will receive donations through J. S. Helm, recalling Clark’s long tenure and friendship in the city.
Herman Koehler a seven year old Chicago paper boy was handed a five dollar bill by a stranger for a one cent paper. He doubted at first but after the note was pinned to his coat he realized the money was his. He is the son of William W Koehler a well known letter carrier and will add the sum to his savings of fifteen dollars.
