Galena meets defeat as Freeport dominates early

Freeport pounded Galena with a powerful three inning display, scoring almost at will and ending the game early. Galena could not answer as Freeport built a wide margin and closed out the contest.

Freeport tops Galena in rough nine to two game

Galena lost 9 to 2 as Freeport dominated with timely hits and fielding miscues. Key plays included Householder’s three runs and Schneiberg, Boston, Meade, and Sullivan contributing multiple hits. Galena’s Friend made two costly errors, while Cahill and O’Day turned in solid at bats for the locals.

Two Women Die in River Tragedy at Freeport

In Freeport a fisherman found the body of Mrs. Julia Young near the riverbank and, soon after, the body of sixteen year old Media Pyles. Initial reports claimed a double suicide but later evidence suggested possible murder or complicity. A coroner's inquest was anticipated.

Ferry Founders Sinks on Harris Slough with Cattle Aboard

A gear's ferry boat manned by Capt Gear with about fifteen cattle and household goods struck a submerged stump in Harris Slough during a run Thursday. The boat sank and the cattle swam ashore while occupants were rescued by a rowboat. Capt Gear planned to bring large barrels to the wreck site Friday to raise the sunken craft.

Ordinance on Main Street sidewalks and curbing

The city of Galena adopts an ordinance requiring property owners along Main Street to obtain the grade and specifications from the city engineer before building sidewalks or curbing. Violators face fines from five to fifty dollars and daily penalties for continued noncompliance. Passed June 6, 1905. Approved Mayor Charles Scheerer. City Clerk John J. Thode.

Graduates of St. Clara's College Hold Annual Commencement

The fifty first commencement at St. Clara's college and academy of Sinsinawa Mound featured eleven graduates led by Mary Fidele Gleason and Julia Mary Fitzgerald. Most Rev Diomede Falconio attended and conferred degrees, with Bishop Carroll of Helena delivering the address. Honors included multiple gold medals and certificates across piano, harmony, catechism, and commercial departments, plus a varied program of choral and instrumental performances.
