Platteville news reports a busy mining camp with drilling near the new state normal school and many local homesteads, as firms like West Main Street Mining, Klar-Piquette, Mitchell-Hollow and Grant County push multiple holes. Shares rise as companies drill deeper, with several prospects, shafts, and planned mill construction shaping the town’s future.
A new addition to the Columbia hotel near Platteville will be completed in about two weeks. Eighteen large airy well lighted rooms with moquette rugs and box spring mattresses will boost capacity. The hotel prides itself on a good table and its reputation as the best in the city.
A Guilford township barn owned by Geo Bautsch was struck by lightning on a Wednesday night, tearing out a side and leaving the structure practically ruined. The farmer’s wife, who was near a window, was knocked unconscious but recovered, and the farmer, with aid from a neighbor, saved the house from the blaze. The barn suffered severe damage and is largely destroyed.
The Freeport Journal reports that the high school junior class held a meeting to decide on hosting a reception for the graduating seniors. A split over dancing led to a vote to decline the event, with non dancing members convinced it would fail without their support. The long standing junior seniors reception is cancelled for this year, though some juniors may hold a picnic at Globe Park during commencement week.
Rev Pilz of St John s Lutheran church will arrive Thursday after a New York wedding and honeymoon. The congregation will host a reception at the church parlors that evening for the pastor and his bride. Also advertising baseball supplies and low prices on gloves mitts masks body protectors and uniforms with agents for Spalding and Reach goods.
John E. Mullen traveled to Galena to assess the street fair company offerings for Savanna's upcoming fair. He aimed to secure the firm to operate attractions at the Savanna event.
Galena took a 3 to 2 victory over Moline Muscatine at the fairgrounds in a game marked by nine visitor errors. J Allen Barber born February 12 1850 in Lancaster Wisconsin entered the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1867 graduating June 6 1871. He served aboard multiple ships including Omaha Michigan Brooklyn Ranger and Monongahela before resigning in 1882. He died June 6 1906 in Chicago after a stomach operation. Funeral held at family residence with Rev S J Yundt officiating. Burial at Greenwood cemetery.
James Riley formerly of this place died at Warren yesterday after illness. He was about 35 and survived by his mother in town. Funeral likely to be held at Warren. Carnival curfew: no rowdyism or violent language on streets this evening. those carrying weapons will be arrested. Charles Scheerer, Mayor.
Sullivan of Apple River and J W Murphy with Jos Teasdale from New Diggings visited the city yesterday while Virgil Reddington of Platteville spent a few hours there. Wilbur Eckstein of Chicago stayed with his parents Elmer and Wilbur Nadig. Wendell Steigner from Thompson attended the carnival. George Peacock of New Diggings, a Bartsch barber shop employee, has returned home. William McCarty of Oklahoma stays with Mrs. Patrick McCormack. The Blesmann cigar factory was exposed to whitewash and cleaning, improving the interior in recent days.
The National Amusement Company, after a week here, will move to Mount Carroll. Tents and equipment will be loaded tonight and Sunday, then shipped Monday morning for a Tuesday opening. Savanna also plans a carnival, with the company likely to move on to that location after Mount Carroll.
The Order of Railway Telegraphers marks its twenty seventh anniversary at Cedar Rapids Iowa with attendance from Galena and nearby areas. Noted members including A D Thurston of St Louis will speak. Wages have risen about seven dollars monthly and eight hour work limits praised for safety. Maryland eight hour law cited as model for broader adoption. A special Illinois Central led train conveyed attendees and a large local contingent is present from Apple River East Dubuque Galena Portage Nora and Scales Mound.

St Michael s Catholic church will hold a first communion class for about sixty children at 8 am and a K of C mass at 10 am.
Early berries sold out before 10 o clock with strong demand while growers note overstock risk next week. Potatoes suffered pest damage yet expect good yields. rain boosts crops and new potatoes may appear after July Fourth. Local trade praised, dry goods showing strength despite carnival impact.
