Mary Carroll Declared Insane After Sanity Trial

Miss Mary Carroll of Pleasant Valley was examined by County Judge Rippin who ruled her insane after a second evaluation. Previously acquitted three weeks ago, she has worsened and will be sent to the hospital at Watertown for care. She is about 36 years old.

John F Wickler of Porter Mann Wickler was moved to his Scales Mound home this afternoon after days of serious illness with stomach trouble. His recovery is considered doubtful. He is a leading and well known business man in the city and county.

Two Miners Are Killed in Clash at Indiana Pa

In Indiana Pennsylvania on June 8 officers and striking miners clashed in a fierce battle. Several volleys were exchanged and two miners were killed outright while six were wounded before the riot was quelled. Ben Wubbes of Menominee was in the city on business.

Not Guilty Verdict In Double Tragedy Of Fishing Loss Case

George Conkling of Belle Vue sued Henry Whitmore for false arrest and imprisonment and for loss of a fishing net and property. After two trials, the jury returned a not guilty verdict yesterday for Whitmore. The case drew wide county attention with 12 to 13 witnesses heard again and motions possible but unlikely.

Foot Crushed In Drill Accident At Highland

A. J. Licheske of Highland sustained a severe foot injury when a crank shaft key struck his foot as he assisted in moving a traction engine and drilling machine toward Whitson Junction. The engine started without warning, crushing bones before he freed his foot.

Purchases New Launch II by L Hornung in Galena

L Hornung of this city recently bought a family launch from a Dubuque boat builder. The craft arrived yesterday afternoon and is a neat, pretty boat equipped with a two horsepower Schepple engine. It seats six to eight people, reflecting the growing demand for launches among Galena residents in summer.

Northwestern Runs Special Train for Wisconsin Carnival

Northwestern plans a special train for Wisconsin Carnival attendees from here to Platteville. It departs at 9 30 p m and stops at all stations along the line, reaching Platteville shortly after 11 30 p m. David Virtue of Rawlings township delivered lambs to Miller Bros. Theft at Old Plantation Show Sparks Chase to Depot

At the Troup carnival a show employee grabbed about fifteen dollars from the cash drawer and fled toward the Illinois Central depot. He escaped after a long chase with show workers pursuing him through the streets. Two Wintegar Hill farmers clashed in a restaurant, using pop bottles as weapons, leaving one badly injured. Several other disturbances occurred but no arrests were made.

Attendance small at Galena carnival despite fine weather

Big White Bear Hit by Train At Illinois Central Tracks

A full blooded Indian from northern Wisconsin known as Big White Bear was struck by an Illinois Central train in Galena while walking on the track. He suffered only a slight shoulder injury, was taken to a hotel, escaped, then wandered the carnival grounds drunk and disruptive. He belongs to a Wisconsin reservation where liquor sales to natives is reportedly restricted.
