Murderous Hatchet Attack Shocks Scales Mound

In Scales Mound a 65 year old German, John Hubler, assaulted Chris Heldt with a hatchet at a cheese factory, wounding him on the scalp and leaving Heldt awaiting fate. Hubler was bound over to the next court term with $500 bond after a hearing in Galen.

Members of Lead Mine Hose Co No 3 and Spring St Hose Co No 5 are summoned to meetings in their rooms to plan attendance at the funeral of deceased Fireman M. Griebe. Remains of Mrs Mark Brown Arrive for Interment

The body of Mrs. Mark Brown arrived in Galena from Kansas City on the Burlington at 10 45 and was taken to Greenwood Cemetery for burial. She was formerly a Galena resident, moved years ago after her husband died, and was the sister-in-law of Merry Charles Cook. Illinois Central Fireman Scalded At East Dubuque

I C Fireman Klein of Waterloo scalded early Tuesday on a west bound Illinois Central freight engine 51 at East Dubuque. While dampening coal dust with a hot hose water splashed his face and shoulders causing severe burns. He was taken to a physician then home to Waterloo in critical condition but expected to recover.

Freeport Youth Walks to St Paul and Attends Cascade Picnic

Edwin Selle, son of a Freeport banker, walked from Freeport to St Paul arriving at noon Wednesday. He will not walk back. Over fifty K of Cs from Galena attended Cascade Knights of Columbus picnic at Bellevue Grand View Park with Dubuque, La Motte, Galena, and Dubuque. Terrible reports cite a Humble oil field fire about a month ago destroying thirty million gallons of oil and twelve tanks. Official statements claim at least fifty men perished with few escaping through two gates while guards barred exit to save property.
