Architects have nearly finished drawings for a new library. Plans will be submitted to the board of directors on August 15 for approval. It is expected the contract may be let by September. John Kelly, a long time Shullsburg resident born in County Cork in 1833, died at his home at 9 o clock Tuesday morning. He immigrated to the United States in 1862, first settling in White Oak Springs, and had lived in this county continuously. His wife died about four years ago. He leaves two sons, James and John. Funeral arrangements call for an 8 o'clock departure from the house.

Mrs C D Rollins aged about 35 dies Friday after months of illness. Born Kuchemann in Galena, she lived here before marriage to Rollins, later moving to Warren, then returning to Meeker street. Survived by husband, one child, three brothers Herman Ernest John and five sisters. Funeral at 2 PM tomorrow from Kuchemann home on Meeker street.
The Sixth Regiment Rifle association forms to promote team shooting. A committee led by Captain Cushman, Captain Geiger, and Major Reigh will organize company teams from twelve companies to contest for a silver cup at each encampment. An assessment funds the trophy, kept by the winning company.
Mrs Patrick Reedy of Benton street sustained serious injuries when a wheel came off her buggy causing a fall in Freeport near Alderman Louis McGovern’s home. Doctors say skull fracture possible, she has been unconscious since the incident and her condition remains critical this afternoon. Medical aid was promptly provided at the scene.
Great Falls Montana August 4 The Electrolic Boston and Montana company shut down last night due to a strike by smeltermen. Six thousand men are directly or indirectly affected. The smelters are among the world’s largest. The text ends with a garbled query about Coatsworth’s dry goods store.
Jeff Crawford of Hazel Green said the Platteville to Dubuque interurban is moving forward with material arriving and work to start soon. The route remains undecided with surveys done and several possible paths, but Hazel Green will anchor three lines toward Dubuque, Lena Ga lena, and Platteville, with a power house likely at Hazel Green this fall.

R A Bratton returns from the Potosi District praising installations of machinery in several mines and the growing ore output. He notes mills being set up and the Potosi Milling Company sinking a main pump shaft. The Galena Iron Works near completion of a concentrator for Preston Point and Krog Webster, with mills soon to operate.
A city visitor reports widespread oats not yet stacked with threshing starting late. He says most fields will finish stacking by week’s end and threshing may stretch into September, with some grain moved directly to machines from shocks. A faded 1853 leaf found by Bellevue settler W K Henton lists steamboats seen in 1853 with the Excelsior as the first up that year dated March 17 1863. Appleton Wisconsin August 4 Four young men and two girls escaped death when gasoline ignited in the pleasure craft Tony Von Lake Winnebago last night. Fire from a lantern ignited gasoline in the bottom of the boat causing occupants to be thrown overboard and one unconscious. Graef, fearing a larger explosion, cut a hole in the hull and sank the craft.
J. A. Hulett and T. A. Lindsay arrived in Rockford shortly after midnight in a six cylinder racing car en route from Toledo Ohio to a cross country trip. They will proceed to Chicago from Rockford. The car is a red devil model said to be able to run a mile a minute.
Two men identified as Russians Lena Borio and J Juackum were arrested after disorderly conduct in front of the DeSoto house. Officer Budden fainted during the struggle, recovered at the Y M C A, and both suspects were given a hearing, fined, and jailed.
J B Pascoe of the Galena Times denounces inconsistent paving and widespread weeds in Galena back streets. He notes No 6 hose house site as city property and laments its condition. Citing Cuba City practice, he argues property owners should clear weeds or taxes will fund weed clearance.
The Ladies Aid society of First Presbyterian church offers an auto ride next Friday evening from 6 to 8 with 25 cent fares benefiting church and society. An August 16 Dubuque excursion is also planned with 75 cent round trip fare, Gear's ferry boat chartered, and a 40 passenger limit with over half tickets sold.
Collector of customs David Hoover and Chinaman Quon Lee are bound over to the federal grand jury in 3000 each on a conspiracy to smuggle Chinese into the United States. The case alleges an organization and Hoover’s role in routing Chinese through Gateway port.
