Two Apple River Residents Die on Thursday

Two Apple River residents died Thursday. James McFadden, nearly eighty, was a respected Apple River resident who passed away Thursday evening. William Laird died Thursday afternoon at his home four miles from Apple River after several months of illness.

River Bridge Lights Ordered After Navigation Safety Resolve

Boats named Up-Hagle Point and others passed the Dubuque draw with water stage at 6.6 and falling. The Dubuque and Dunleith Bridge Co must install lighting per a resolution signed by Admiral R D Evans to illuminate bridges on navigable rivers from sunset to sunrise. The steamer Lily under Commander Caperton is northbound inspecting lights and enforcing compliance.

Benton Wins Oratorial Contest Train Run By Northwestern

The Northwestern Railroad ran a special from Platteville to Benton for the oratorical contest held there Friday evening. The contest was won by Benton. Judge William Spensley of this city served as one of the judges.

Y M C A Institute Meeting at Galena May 3

A Y M C A Institute meeting will be held in Galena on Wednesday May 3 with state secretaries J E B Brown A M Brunner and E M Tomlinson of Chicago attending. The program includes noon board discussion on Business Management a 2 PM Educational Work 4 PM Boys Work 6 PM Volunteer Service and a 8 PM mass meeting at Turner Hall.

City Council Set for Final Meeting of Old Board

The city council will convene Monday at 9:00 a.m. for the last session of the old council. New officials will be inaugurated, and mayoral appointees are under speculation.
