Captain John McCarty Leaves for Klondike Venture

Capt. John McCarty former Mississippi river steam boat pilot departs Galena next month for St Michaels Alaska to serve as master of a Yukon river steamer for the North American Trading and Transportation company. After this season he plans to settle in Seattle Washington as his future home.

Accident at Sinsinawa Mound Injures James Craney

James Craney suffered a severe hand injury while working at a pump near Sinsinawa Mound on Wednesday afternoon. A Dubuque physician attended him and he was taken to Mercy Hospital in Du Ge where he is resting easy. Sine Job Work at the Tribune Office. Good work, Prompt service.

Missing 15 year old boy with $5000 last seen in Muscatine

Richard Hookman, 15, arrived from the Black Hills with $5000 in a buckskin sack to his grandmother’s home in Muscatine. After a brief stay he disappeared outdoors, prompting frantic grandmother and police involvement. July 3 and 4 Saengerbund jubilee set to celebrate 50 years with 300 trained voices. An early morning Great Western freight derailment near Dubuque delayed trains, but no injuries reported.

Northern Illinois high school league eyed for track and declamatory events

The Rockford Star reports plans to form a northern Illinois high school league for track athletics and declamatory contests. Potential members include Rockford Freeport Dixon Galena LaSalle Polo Mt. Carroll Savanna Belvidere and Sterling with ten schools hoped. If some decline others will be invited and a Freeport meeting will discuss reorganization.

Prizes Awarded in Helm Pure Food Picture Puzzle

The prize winners are Anna Westwick first with seventeen correct answers and Rena Polkinghorn second with seventeen, each $1.50. Agnes Mathey won third with thirteen correct for fifty cents. Marjorie Malone had twelve, Della Toepel eleven. Westwick and Polkinghorn shared first and second prizes due to ties. Mary Brown visits friends in Dubuque.

Illinois shippers win call for freight rate probe

After years of effort the Illinois railroad and Warehouse commission will start an investigation of freight rates on May 16 following a petition signed by over 3,000 shippers and the Chicago Shippers Association. Former Attorney General Hamlin urged action while Illinois Central’s John G. Drennan said railroads had no objection to the inquiry.
