Senator Philander Chase Knox of Pennsylvania and Secretary of State under Taft died suddenly at his Washington home. A woman claiming to read fortunes allegedly stole bills from his purse during a street incident before authorities arrived. Knox had been abroad, resumed duties, and was in his second Senate term.
