Empress of Ireland Sinks After Collision in Dense Fog
In a tragic St. Lawrence loss, the Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Ireland was rammed amidships by the Norwegian collier Storstad near Father Point in heavy fog. Four hundred three survivors were rescued, but 964 people perished, many in the rapid flooding and chaotic scramble on deck as lifeboats launched. The wreck sent wreckage and bodies washing into the dawn light while rescue vessels Lady Evelyn and Eureka hastened to the scene.
