At a January 17, 1914 meeting in Wauseon council members faced smallpox concerns amid other local items. The mayor and health officer praised precautions taken since the outbreak, noting four mild cases and that schools remain open while vaccination progress continues.
The council held a special meeting to approve vaccination for those unable to pay and to reopen schools on January 26. Names include L. Gottschalk, Silas, and more, with residents like J. Burkhold and J. H. Burkhold listed among attendees and accounts showing various payments. Local order also reports an arrest in Ak and a Swanton disturbance settled by Sheriff Boone, plus a police hearing resulting in fines and deferred jail terms.
The poem honors E L B as a man of conscience and right, chiseled in character, who faced life’s trials with bravery. It compares his death at noon tide to a final procession of bells in a celestial choir, praising his simple candor and trusting faith. Anonymous.
The Tribune announces five line free ads in Farmers Exchange and Employment Bureau departments for subscribers starting next week. Non-subscribers may use ads at one cent per word per insertion. each subscriber gets one free ad per month. Also included is a 1914 notice about reopening Wauseon Public Schools with vaccination requirements and legal authority details.
Fulton County supports the Soldiers Monument project with school fund drives and township appeals. Teachers and residents, including Weeks and Strong, contribute and plan house to house canvassing as they seek funds and responses for the monument. The notice details guardianship, estates, and real estate sales alongside local legal and probate actions.
Mrs. Philip D. Christman of Bryan died at four o clock after being burned while attempting to hurry up her laundry pouring gasoline. She was lightly clad and much of her skin was scorched. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nebelung of Wauseon she leaves husband and one son. Burns treated with Hanford's Balsam. Also notes Fulton County Farmers Mutual Insurance and Aid Association meeting postponed to February 18 1914 by Wauseon Board of Health. E L Linden secretary.
