Feeding Crops for Livestock and Soil Health
Experiments at the Ohio Experiment Station show feeding clover to livestock with returned manure is preferable to plowing under. Six months’ surface clover loses about as much carbon as when the crop is fed, with roughly half the carbon gone in winter. Feeding hay preserves organic matter and yields mammal value, while saving labor. The Mushy Optimist critiques war optimism and calls out flawed judgments and sanctimony in patriotic rhetoric.

Fertilizer prices shift wartime profits in Ohio trials
Ohio Experiment Station results show acid phosphate net per acre rose from 5.39 to 10.72 with corn at double prior price and oats and hay up. Acid phosphate around 3.20 a ton now, gain about 6. Nitrogen and potassium carriers would lose money under current prices. Raw phosphate rock more profitable than before, yet still below acid phosphate in Ohio tests.
