Overland journey to California 1852 diary fragments
Extracts from the Journal of Mrs. Lucia M. Shoemaker describe a July to August 1852 Overland House trek across the Meadows and Deserts toward Carson Valley. The entries recount heat, mosquitoes, water scarcity, wagon travel, water prices, rough mountain paths, snow at the summit, and life in Hang Town with observations on emigration, hardship, and reflections on time, morality, and reform.
