Toledo House Advertisement for Produce Sale 1854

An old Toledo Ohio notice lists RY sion Merchant and Pendiston Co as buyers and sellers of produce. It mentions Collins House, operated by R. O. Collins, located one block west of the Morrne Corner. June 19, 1854 appears as a date reference in the fragmentary text.

Prize Awarded for Ode to the Greek Slave at Sanctusky

Augustine Duganne of New York City won a 100 prize from the Cosmopolitan Art and Literary Association of Sanctusky for the Ode to the Greek Slave. The competition drew 17 entrants, with a committee including Storrs Willis Hiram Puller and Bayard Taylor selecting the winner.

The Two Spies Foretold Indian Movements at Hocking

From Kay's Autobiography, J B Finley describes in October a frontier post above the Hocking River where M Cleland and White, two fearless spies, watched distant Indian camps from Mount Pleasant. They observed warrior gatherings, races, dances, and shifting camps as they reported looming attacks on frontier posts.
