Meagher Demonstration in New York Aims to Unite Unionists
A September 1861 gathering in New York drew immense crowds at Music Hall with Gov. Andrew presiding and Thomas F. Meagher delivering a forceful appeal for Union defense. He praised Irish valor, denounced Southern rebellion, and urged Irish Americans to rally behind the flag and Democratic and Republican unity to sustain the Union.
