Diptheria Threatens Children Across Northern Illinois Areas
The Chicago Times reports diphtheria spreading fear in multiple Illinois counties including LaSalle, Du Page, and surrounding towns, with several recent deaths. An 1850s editorial note adds a Providence paper description and suggests a simple saltwater gargle and neck soak, plus tonics, as a proposed early treatment. A long anecdote on croup remedies follows, ending with a moral reflection and a Cherokee chief’s prayer at a New York meeting.
