Lincoln Night Address at Theobes Conpar Institute
Fremont Journal reports a February 27 gathering in New York City where Ex-Gov King and other Republicans hosted Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln denounces Democratic and Douglasian views, defends constitutional limits on slavery in federal territories, cites the 1787 thirty-nine framers and 1798 Mississippi Territory acts, and argues our fathers understood no bar to federal control of slavery in western territories. He critiques modern interpretations and calls for adherence to the original principles while urging Republicans to maintain unity and guard against perceived Black Republican threats. A separate note mentions a fatal stabbing in Cincinnati, Henry T. Crawley, and a funeral service attendance.
