An 1854 survivor account details the December 21 wreck of the San Francisco off the Atlantic, describing eight artillery companies aboard, a tormented gale, the loss of masts and decks, mass casualties, and rescue by the Three Bells under Captain Creighton aided by the Antarctic and Kilby. The narrative highlights harsh conditions, cholera-like illness, and gratitude toward rescuers.
A short tale from the Olive Branch follows Pierre, a hungry English musician boy, who sings to comfort his ill mother. He hopes Madame M the singer will perform his song for sale to feed them, and she offers help by inviting him to a concert and supplying food and medicine.
A tale follows Pierre, a gifted boy whose simple song moves a noble singer and audiences. After the singer’s death, publishers offer 300 pounds for the song, and Madame M helps the family. Pierre prays for the singer and remains devoted, while he rises to wealth and fame as a prominent composer.
Lieut Parsons recalls Richard Bennett mortally wounded in Nelsons battle requesting a miniature and a lock of hair for his sweetheart Susette in Scotland. At her mothers jetty cottage Susette, pale and pale with rose-tinged room light, presses the token to her heart then falls back, her pure soul returning to God as her mother and the lieutenant mourn.
