Black Matt the slave dealer and the mulatto Sam story
A distorted tale from Petersburg recounts Matthew Hobson known as Black Matt a slave dealer who breaks in slaves. He ships Sam a mulatto to New Orleans to fetch high price after dressing him in fine clothes. Sam boasts the boy can read write shave, and act civilized but reveals the fault he believes the boy has a white conceit. A planter agrees to buy him though Sam warns of the color prejudice and Sam’s plan to profit.
