Irvine Kentucky reports a mob seized Alexander Richardson and hanged him near a railroad bridge after a deadly assault on Mrs. White. The farmer's wife, two weeks from town, was found beaten with a bloodied club. Authorities charged Richardson with murder amid conflicting statements and circumstantial evidence.
The War Department granted permission for a stand of colors to be presented to the 15th Infantry at Fort Sheridan by representative Chicago citizens. Col Crofton of the regiment will receive the colors, raised by subscription, as part of recognizing the unit’s service during the railroad strike. The ceremony is planned for this month.
A south bound freight train on the Asheville and Spartanburg line derailed after racing four miles down Saluda Mountain. The engine and twelve cars left the track and piled in a cut. Engineers and several crew members were not located. fireman York believed dead. Conductor Will Fatton sustained severe leg and hip injuries. Samuel W. Cook, a former navy yard worker, was later injured in Valparaiso and died after further mishaps in Washington.
A wagon of hop pickers was struck on the rail tracks at Chartham England by a passing train hidden by fog. Five people were killed instantly and others were seriously hurt.
