Manila City at center of Philippine trade and history
Manila, founded by Legaspi in 1571, sits on Manila Bay at the Pasig. The city blends Spanish and Oriental styles with forts, churches, markets, and a busy Escolta street. It exports sugar, tobacco, hemp, cocoons, and fine fabrics while housing universities, courts, and a naval arsenal. In 1045 an earthquake nearly destroyed it and in 1762 a British fleet occupied it for fifteen months.
