The Nature of Love and The Fall in Eden

An exploration of divine love and human free will. It argues that creation of man mirrors God, with Eve representing affection and Adam intellect. Disobedience alters the voluntary form, causing death as a change of life, not annihilation, and prophets foretell divine salvation amidst rising evil.

The Capital Convention urges relocation of the National Capital

The National Capital Convention at St Louis unanimously adopted a set of resolutions calling for removing the capital to the Mississippi Valley. It argues the present site is obsolete, unsafe in war, and geographically inconvenient, asserting the center of population and wealth now lies in the valley and urging Congress to appoint a commission to choose a convenient site within the Mississippi basin.

Steam Steering A Full Description of the Apparatus

A correspondent describes a trial of steam steering on the small steamer Worth Star of Muskegon. The lever system allows instantaneous steering from any position, with the rudder staying in place without power. The life lines provide continuous deck-wide communication for steering from any area, aiding safety in fires or disasters. The report compares potential safety gains to historic river and lake incidents. A second note mentions Melbourne’s public library offering access only to readers with clean hands.

Coral Island Formation Through Coral Polyps And Sediment

Coral islands rise when coral polyps attach to submerged frames, then broken fragments and sea beads accumulate under a protective water barrier. The mass hardens like mortar, forming a low island a few feet above sea level where seabirds roost and seeds drift ashore. Cocoa palms and other plants take root as drifted seeds and eggs or cocoons settle in, leading to a new land mass with vegetation and insects establishing on the shore.

Mail transport distance rivals sunward journey

The United States mails traveled just over 99 million miles in the last fiscal year, a distance stretching around the globe many times. If laid out in a line it would extend 3600 circumnavigations, with a single messenger needing 29 years for the same duration of sound travel. The service cost about 10 million dollars, roughly eleven cents per mile, more than the expense of transporting a congressman.

Joe Jefferson Once Lived in Galena and Shaped by Family

The Galena Gazette recalls Joe Jefferson the famed comedian as a Galena resident and son of a local family. At age ten in winter 1837 he studied with Mrs. Farrar sister of Captain Gear, becoming an irrepressible wit. Relatives once hoped he would match his dramatist grandfather, a hope some lived to see realized.
