Cannas with Gladioli in Pots At Paris Markets
Gardner's Magazine notes Cannas with Gladioli as a popular Paris market combo. A bronzy Canna clump with one or two Brenchleyensis Gladioli bulbs sells well in pots, their large leaves offsetting bright scarlet blooms. Usually Cannas are pinched to keep flowers from opening.

Monument to commemorate Russia over Turkey ordered in France
A monument to celebrate Russia's triumph over Turkey has been ordered in France by the Russian Government. An aged St Petersburg artist designed a truncated pyramid with a Russian eagle, talons on the crescent and Turkish flag. Bas relief panels show Danube crossings, torpedoed Turkish ironclad, Kara siege, Czar visit to Simnitz hospital, and Russian encampment before Constantinople, with captured Turkish cannon at the base.
