Grant Visit at Galena and a Senator’s Back Pay Claim
President Grant visited Galena last week arriving Thursday evening welcomed by a large crowd. The Gazette office and prominent buildings were lit. He stayed with L. S. Felt and hosted a party by Non R. H. McLellan. A public reception followed at his Galena residence, then the party proceeded to Chicago for a Sunday stay. Senator Samuel Shellabarger of Springfield, an acting member of the Board of Civil Service Commissioners, has refused back pay saying it would reflect on his colleagues and he would rather forgo the money than appear demagogic. he notes he drew back pay in 1866 under a prior salary raise but resists voting for the current law’s payment.

Reply to the Dakota Grange speech on farmers and rails
A 1878 Davis Illinois address defends editors and lawyers, urges farmer unity for cheap transportation, and argues power rests with the people. It condemns monopolies, previews court reforms, and calls for fair rail rates while warning against excessive taxation and water stock.
