An account from the Fort Smith Era details a deadly clash in the Indian Territory near the Cherokee Nation as Deputy Marshals attempt to arrest Ezekiel Proctor for murdering a Cherokee woman. The siege at the Court House leaves seven of eleven marshal staff dead and many wounded while Cherokee and U.S. authorities mobilize a large force to pursue the attackers and seize suspects.
