Jefferson Webster on the Sabbath and Sunday Schools

Miner refuses grave burial after strike of lead line

A White Pine digger hired to dig a grave for a man who died at the mines refused to leave the grave, claiming he had struck a line of lead and could not bury the body in the hole. A Wisconsin gentleman sat on a beehive and momentarily stayed seated before rising.

Odd Beaux of Employment and Courtship Tales

From the Washington Chronicle a variety of items recounts printers seeking work after travel across the country. A seedy applicant at the Government Printing Office relates his travels from Cheyenne to New York and Baltimore, begging for a job with little money. Lighter vignettes describe a courtship mischief, a Sunday school scene with three unruly boys, and political sympathy for Cuba.
