The Western Horticulturist argues Western grown fruit trees fare worse in the Northwest climate due to rapid autumn and winter freezes. Eastern grown trees, older and hardier, endure sudden cold snaps better, with ripened wood resisting disease and wind stress. Eastern transplants thus yield superior Northwest orchards when healthy stock from New York nurseries is used.
Samuel Edwards in Prairie Farmer argues for widespread tree planting on the prairies to shield stock from harsh winters, stabilize winds and rain, and protect fruit and timber alike.
