Henry Wilson spoke briefly at the eighth annual National Temperance Convention in Chicago. In ScriENeER for June, M A B Johnson recalls an 1866 plot to assassinate Charles Sumner. Two rough men visited Sumner’s rooms twice, frightening women servants who could not confirm the intruders’ appearance after careful questioning.
The article details how two Massachusetts delegates Henry Dawes and Gooch, returning from Manassas, visited Senator Sumner’s lodgings. They were shadowed by fear and rumors, as guards and disguises surrounded Sumner after a gunshot killed President Lincoln. Witnesses recall the April 14 events and the men’s rough appearance and curiosity about Sumner’s whereabouts.
A Keokuk woman, startled by a mouse in a flour barrel, summoned the hired man, fetched a shotgun, and urged the dog to pursue. She fought the spill with a pole, the mouse fled, the dog was shot dead, and she fainted falling downstairs. The hired man fled, fearing arrest, and the mouse escaped.
In Pottawattamie County five ringville Grange 1004 recently assembled in session, declaring themselves free from the National and State bodies. They cited loss of confidence in national officers and mismanagement of finances as the grievance, and that their annual passwords were withdrawn.
