In 1839 Schuyler County Illinois a resident Rogers is tried for counterfeiting Mexican dollars. Neighbors testify to coin production in a rough shop and the trial highlights Benton specie theory, local trust in silver, and a defense praising Rogers as a benevolent Democrat aiding the poor and widow. The not guilty verdict ends the case with vigilante rumor and lingering suspicion.
