Railroad ride for First M. E. Church Sunday School

Charlie Knapp of Northwestern road offers Sunday School scholars of the First M. E. Church a railroad ride on Friday at 10 o clock, followed by a picnic in a shady spot and an evening return by train. The youngsters look forward to the excursion with great anticipation.

The Big Show at Freeport Promises Lively Circus

Freeport crowds filled venues for Howes Great London Circus. Three performances—forenoon, afternoon, and evening—featured an excellent wild animal display and a chic, elegant act. Reported attendance and receipts suggest a strong financial turnout despite hard times.

Freeport Boys vs Shannonites Ends in Umpire Dispute

Last Saturday Freeport traveled to Shannon for a basketball game. The Shannonites protested the umpire’s decision and quit the match. Freeport led when play stopped, the umpire ruled for Freeport, and the $20 stake remained unsettled. Many players missed the return freight as some rode Foot and Walker’s line home.

Fourth in Freeport celebrated with crowd and parade

The Fourth in Freeport drew a perfect throng on Monday the 5th. Incoming trains were packed as residents and visitors filled the city. The Firemen's parade and steam engine demonstrations thrilled thousands, with flowers and flags adorning the apparatus. Prizes unseen but rumored that No. 1 swept.

Fell Into a Cellar After Dark in Warren

A man named John T. Cabell fell into an open cellar during a late train visit to Warren. He was rescued with serious injuries including a dislocated breastbone and broken ribs. The incident occurred on Stephenson Street near the Illinois Central depot during construction by John Effert and Jacob Krohn. Cabell may sue the city for dangerous man traps and poor lighting, with potential large damages and a push for gas street lighting.

State tax refund for 1878 on 1873 assessment

Harlem Sabbath School Convention at Harlem Center Church

The Harlem Sabbath School Convention met at Harlem Center Church on July 4 1875 with large attendance. Reports from Harlem Center School Millerburg School Greenville Union show hundreds of attendees and modest funds and papers distributed. Ewing was elected President and Jas Flansburg Secretary for the coming year with Malnix Flansburg and Smallwood named to plan the next convention.

Railroad surveyors scan Lanark crossing site in Forreston era

Geo Youngs and Geo Bowen of the Chicago and Pacific Railroad visited Lanark with citizens to study a crossing on the Chicago and Pacific line. A surveying party traveled via town, crossing the Illinois Central track 20 rods north of the roundhouse. Grades Byron to Forreston described as comparatively easy.
