After a series of quiet confrontations and generous scheming, Mrs. St. John marries a broker, leaving Shelmerdine to realize his true feelings for Lottie. He chooses love over wealth and status in a springtime Connecticut town.
The Randolph Enterprise in Ohio recounts a spoof initiation of Grangers with cabbage regalia, pumpkin head symbols, and comical rites. The tale mocks fraternal pageantry by detailing absurd tests, disguises, and exaggerated punishments as a satire of agrarian fraternal ceremonies.
