In a De Pere Christmas tale Evangel LaCroix, a sixteen year old dying of consumption, receives a Christward farewell. The LaCroix family, filled with sorrow, witnesses a solemn Christmas mass and Evangel’s final sunset at the west window, as prayers and faith adorn a somber homegoing. Her death after a day of family ritual and devotion marks a serene, saintly passing from life to eternal light.
Leavenworth Kansas December 15 1874. A powerful Texas tale recounts the lynching of Thomas Ford Moore in Sumner County Kansas after a mob seized him for horse stealing. He claimed innocence and asked time to prove it, but the lynch mob hanged him before evidence could be weighed. His letters and his adoptive father Governor Ford’s son are cited to show his true identity and sorrow.
The piece argues that Northern Democratic portrayals of southern riots misstate events and that true reform requires fair treatment and equal rights for African Americans. It contends that Democratic home rule would restore slavery’s legacy and undermine civil rights, urging justice and protection of equal citizenship rather than vindictive removal. It cites Windsor, Vicksburg, and New Orleans incidents to warn against partisan framing and to call for federal protection of rights.
A gaunt man enters a Fourth Street restaurant and insists on a coffee and bread, but the server offers a full fifty cent dinner. The stranger, claiming he is not very hungry, agrees to try a complete roast beef meal, and plates pile up as he devours food rapidly. The proprietor whispers, amazed by the stranger’s appetite.
In a cluttered room a hungry stranger demands roast beef and coffee while a landlord implores humor to avoid eviction. The waiter pleads mercy as the guest ruins the kitchen, but the landlord offers partial payment to send him to the Holly Tree Inn where he can eat free for fifty cents. The traveler accepts, intent on a simple coffee and bread before continuing his journey.
Multitudes of men and women have strained their eyes by very fine reading and sewing. The rules advise avoiding sudden light changes, reading in twilight, sleeping with eyes near strong light, and not reading directly in front of a window. Lighting should come from above or obliquely, with blue ceilings and green carpets to ease vision.
A Tennessee funeral was briefly postponed by one hour to allow a horse trade. The event phrase Basin before pleasure appears as a motto associated with the scene. The incident shows a rural notice touching community priorities and timing.
