An old fable recounts a rooster and hen who fashion a wagon from a shoe with help from animals as they travel toward Rome to become pope. A sparrow, crow, raven, and fox join the journey, ending in a fox’s house where cunning leads to a fatal ambush for the rooster and friends. The tale winds through a mosaic of 19th century clippings and anecdotes about society, theater, and oddities across America.
A muddled fable shows a Spider and a Flea in a house where beer is brewed in an eggshell. When the Spider spills, the Door, Broom, Cart, Ashes, Tree, Maiden, and Streamlet react in turn, each repeating the cause: the Spider scalded herself and the Flea weeps, triggering a chain of actions and a shaking Tree as the tale pivots toward the Maiden breaking her pitcher. Dialogue-heavy and archaic in tone, it sketches a whimsical kitchen-treehouse world where consequences ripple through objects and a passing girl ends the cycle.
