Fires devastate hotels and town buildings in multiple incidents
A fire at the St Charles Hotel near Western Depot nearly totalled the building and damaged furniture, while adjacent structures survived with minor losses. Harvard Hotel fire caused by a stove-pipe threat nearly consumed the property but was halted by a swift town effort. Additional reports describe a prison uprising in Levart and a Paw Paw murder trial, plus other local fires and incidents, all reflecting a period of active peril and community response.

Jules Gerard the Lion Killer remembered mystery
French consul reports details from Sierra Leone about Jules Gerard, the explorer killed two years ago in Central Africa. Accounts say natives pillaged his camp and tied him naked, a wooden weight attached to his waist. A second note describes an elephant rat duel at the Garden of Plants in London and the elephant’s dramatic handling of the intruding rodent.
