Excess Corn and Land Use Debate on Westward Expansion

A historical policy critique argues that rapid settlement of western lands driven by railroad land grants created surplus corn and underused transport capacity. It notes high freight rates, limited trunk rail expansion, and calls for broader discussion among farmers about production, prices, and tariffs. The piece adds satirical anecdotes about a streetcar conductor, a physiognomy quote, and a Chicago divorce lawyer printing his card on marriage licenses.
