Freed at last the black man’s dream on Sumter shore

Carl Brent recounts a slave’s fight linked to the Civil War. He recalls home beside the Santee, hiding enslaved life, aiding enslaved and enslaver alike, and enduring whipping, peril, and escape. He narrates how Union artillery and courage brought freedom, and his own resolve to endure for his wife and children. He ends ready to die free, proud his sons are free.

Alton Railway Decision Limits Unjust Freight Discrimination

Supreme Court of Illinois reverses a charter forfeiture, ruling that a state law prohibiting railroad freight discrimination is defective and cannot be enforced until amended to target only unjust discrimination and allow company defense. The case centers on Alton & St. Louis Railroad charging Bloomington and Lexington different rates for similar lumber shipments. The decision emphasizes common law duties of common carriers to fair, non discriminatory service and notes the statute’s overreach and due process concerns.

A detailed sweep of actions in the two houses shows the Caldwell case ruling on Kansas Senate validity, the Goat Island Bill moving to the calendar, and various appropriations and bills advancing or failing.
