Mr R M Witt returns from Florida visit

Mr. R M Witt formerly of Yellow Creek now in Waldo Florida visits the office. He traveled south for health reasons and reports a remarkable improvement. He believes Florida will become a great southern state, praising its climate. He brought back several fine oranges from a tree he picked from Monday. An anecdote about fire in a cold room contrasts timid patience with bold effort.

When the First Cow’s Tenth Calf Is Born

A Canton repository problem traces a cow and her descendants each bearing a calf at age two and yearly thereafter until ten calves per line. Wolves Shotting Hunt Promoted by Harlem Farmer

Michael Probst of Harlem township plans a wolf hunt on his timbered land inviting local young men. The plan is to surround the belt, close in toward the center, and shoot any wolves on sight. A large party is reportedly raised for Friday with a dinner promised beforehand.

Elderly Stephenson citizen leaves for Harvard trip

Our friend H. R. Wheeler, one of Stephenson county's oldest and best citizens, has decided to try the grandhopper country and starts this week for Harvard, Clay county, Nebraska. We wish him success and lament the chance of losing his companionship. Such men we need and must retain.

A Good Samaritan Helps Boys With Cents For Sister

Two boys near Diffenbaugh's wished for ten cents to buy a present for their lame sister. A nearby gentleman gave shinplaster money and said he was glad to aid the charitable act. Half an hour later both boys were seen with five cent cigars in their mouths.

New Four Story Factory To Open On Galena Liberty

The northeast corner of Galena and Liberty streets will host a revived four story factory. Formerly a warehouse owned by H H Taylor of Chicago, the building has been purchased by W Woodmanse, maker of the Stover Wind Mill. Renovations proceed, a fifty horse power engine will drive all machinery, with foundry, machine shop, wood shop and paint rooms. Twenty workers start, rising to about fifty before the season begins.

Chapman's Wedding at Stibgen Residence

On Wednesday evening February 3 Charles H. Chapman book keeper at Walton's and Miss Annie Stibgen were married by Rev. F P Cleveland at A K Stibgen's home Stormy weather did not dampen the large gathering After the ceremony guests enjoyed refreshments and many gifts including a bronze clock from the Blue Front boys The bridal party left Thursday morning by train for Chicago to spend a week or so away.

High School Literary Society Delights With Recitations and Art

Members showcased talent in a chilly Wednesday gathering. Declamations by Willie Junkunz Jerome Boyer and Richard Bickenbach and an oration by Joe D Burrell impressed audiences. Miss Alice Ford presented The Weaver with natural ease as Miss Mira Giles gave an essay The race is not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong. An art exhibition featured simple natural statuary and other pieces. The River of Time was sung in quartet with Mrs Wells at the piano. An instrumental duet and a song duet accompanied by Willis Hoover closed the program.

The Freeport Watch Company appears solid with Treasurer L L Munn ready to cover all building liabilities and outfit costs for the first quarter. New directors include J Fry as President and L K Scofield as Vice President, with Prof A A Griffith remaining Secretary and largest owner, as the board plans to start with first and second grade watches and expand staff after machinery is installed.

Aid Society Box Helps Dakota Sufferers

Florence Aid Society sent clothing and necessities to Elk Point Dakota Territory for E W Laird of the Dakota Southern Relief Association. By Friday the box arrived and aid was distributed. A letter from Exe Port describes destitution with 27 below zero, many families lacking provisions and clothing, and requests more aid for Bon Homme Turner Clay and others. The letter expresses deep gratitude and urges continued support.

Cameron Wins Wisconsin Senate Seat in Coalition Vote

In Madison on February 3 Cameron of La Crosse was elected U.S. Senator by a Democrat and bolter coalition, defeating Carpenter. Cameron, born 1826 in Caledonia, moved to Wisconsin in 1857, served six years in the Legislature, and was Speaker in 1867. The session also advanced a railroad control bill, detailing state receipt reporting and valuation to curb corporate powers.
