Self Made Men and True Life Success Principles

Delivered by Hon. d M. Batley at Davis on August 3, 1370, the address extols self made men, inner growth, and strenuous work. It argues true success combines internal development with outward duties to God, neighbor, and humanity, condemning shortcuts and wealth as sole goals.

Taxes to be changed after January next 1871

The act reduces many internal and stamp taxes effective January 1 1871 while preserving current duties. Tea drops to 15 cents per pound, coffee to 3 cents, molasses to 6 cents per gallon, sugar and dried fruits lowered, and spices cut about half. Several internal taxes are slated for relief in October, including carriages, watches, billiard tables, silver and gold plate, passports, boats, and various gross receipts and license taxes, with some sales taxes repealed except on liquors and tobacco.

Tax reductions and Sunday reflections in 1840s finance notes

The document outlines tax exemptions and reductions under the internal revenue system, detailing rates on licenses, goods, stamps, legacies, and corporate dividends. It notes a 24 percent tax on dividends and 24 percent on incomes over $2,000 with exemptions for certain deductions, followed by a Sunday reflection on work and family, ending with a quip about female suffrage.
