Fatal Shooting Report Sparks Trial for Burgess in Illinois
Solon Burgess, formerly of Rock Run Township, now in Mayport Florida, shot and killed an assailant named Thomas after defending himself from an attack in early July. Burgess faces a December term under $3000 bonds. Local editorials defend his character and anticipate an acquittal with counsel Brisbee and Archibald. The Farmers Home Picnic at Andrew’s Mills drew a large turnout despite rain, with Dr. Van Horn and Major H. M. Timms speaking, families enjoying orderly festivities and dancing without alcohol.
