Dr John B. Wolf reports on onions as disinfectants and disease modifiers from 1849 shipboard cholera cases. He claims onions affect smallpox virus, blisters form, and virus spread is reduced in crowded tenements, while opposing routine vaccination and advocating further tests.
Notes from Mr Richard Cropp to the Rome Sentinel extoll cedar brush as a cure against worms and bugs. He says chopped green cedar scattered under currants and bushes repels pests, ties cedar around fruit tree trunks, and even wards off mosquitoes. He adds cedar brush deters flies and can shield a sleeping person or horse from insects.

An 1871 patent notice from Col W H Tambling of Eleroy Illinois describes a simple inexpensive curtain fixture using three top rings and a weighted tassel. The mechanism raises and lowers the curtain without touching it, retaining it at any window position. Freeport merchants endorse the fixture for economy durability and simplicity, stating it exceeds others of its kind.
