Local note urges voters to remember the Judicial Election on Monday August 6. It also points readers to an advertisement seeking proposals to furnish hay for stock for the State Fair. A church sociable at Mr. Holder's residence is postponed due to family illness.
The First District Good Templars meet in Rockford on August 8 and 9 inviting all members. Another meeting occurs August 22 for seven miles east of Freeport and a quarter mile north of Ridott for a week. no huckstering on grounds. Ward's Grove sends a delayed account to Daviess County detailing the town celebration, though aged and omitted from current notes. The writer urges continued correspondence to share further local news in future issues.
Mr Richard Fairbairn, longtime Ridott resident, died suddenly on Friday July 20 while driving his team near his home. He fell or was thrown from the wagon, struck his head, and broke his neck as the team bolted. Immediate aid arrived but he was dead on removal.
Miss Viola Danels daughter of L A Danels has returned home to stay after a year away visiting an aunt in Ohio. Also, John L Taylor, who spent a week at Wisconsin lakes, returned to the city last Saturday.
Mr Jno C Lee, agent for the Canton Wrought Iron Bridge Company, reports closing contracts for multiple bridges this season. Bridges planned over Yellow Creek near Kent, Richland Creek near Orangeville, and Otter Creek at Milledgeville in Carroll County. The Canton bridge is regarded as No 1 by good judges.
A grand concert and ice cream festival for the M E Church will be held at Masonic Hall Orangeville on Saturday evening August 4. Admission ten cents. Program features vocal and instrumental music toasts and responses. Music by Orangeville Quartette aided by Freeport Quartette. Exercises begin 7 80 o clock. The Summer Meeting of the Driving Park Association opens with 84 entries the largest field of horses this year. Visitors welcomed. ladies with gentlemen admitted free. Ordered decorum and comfort at the park.
The Auditing Committee of the State Board of Agriculture will meet in the city at the Driving Park on Wednesday August 8 to arrange rentals for booths and privileges for the State Fair. Feeding the crowds requires extensive planning as hotels are full and dining halls must be established, with churches and societies urged to organize arrangements for the grounds.
The coming State Fair will crowd the city with visitors from across the state and beyond. Citizens must open homes to lodging and meals, as hotels are limited. A committee will list households willing to host guests and assign quarters, revising daily during the fair to protect the city’s reputation.
A long and happy marriage is celebrated as Mr. John Kenegy and his wife observe their golden wedding. Fifty years of life together marked by seven children and two losses are recalled during a pleasant Friday gathering with relatives and friends in Cleveland, Ohio.
The militia company in the city advances well with a roster of forty names under the new militia law. Once finalized, Springfield arms will be supplied and uniforms issued. The list includes A. V. Richards, Geo Lewis, Henry Burrell, and others. A separate item notes picnicers visiting Sciota last Friday with no fish but ample enjoyment. a similar party visited again Saturday and Monday, Sciota remaining a favored spot.

A mayoral proclamation orders a special election to authorize a loan of 13,100 with bonds issued at up to eight percent interest. The funds will redeem outstanding bonds due September 4, 1877. The Burnside badge contest by the Columbia Long Range Rifle Club concluded yesterday with Charles H. Laird winning for the third time, earning the badge after his 184 out of 225 at 1050 yards. Scores for Lauritzen, Bell, and others are listed. the badge on display at Semken's jewelry store.

Proceedings of the Oneco Bible Society held Sunday evening July 22 1877 at the Lutheran and Reformed Church Orangeville. Opening exercises included scripture by Rev Stump and prayer by Rev Wm Caton. Treasurer’s report showed prosperity. Officers elected for the year: President C Dorn Vice President E Deal Secretary J G Wise Treasurer Mrs C Lucas. Local agents named for Orangeville Mrs Danl Beaver Bushcreek John Martzell senior Eldorado Miss D Winchell.
The Bible Society of the county will convene in the U B Church in Orangeville next year by mutual content and the county agent’s call. Delegates to the County Convention will be appointed later. Ten minute talks covered Bible Studies, influence of the Bible as a cry agent, and the American Bible Society’s workings. The session ended profitable with praise for the society’s work.
