Admiral Dewey reaches New York aboard the Olympia amid a welcoming scene as the crew docks. Dispatches confirm a pleasant Atlantic crossing and all aboard report good health. Officials rush to City Hall to plan next steps while the admiral cites the weather as a reason for arriving early.
Manila dispatch reports General Snyder attacked insurgent positions five miles west of Cebu and destroyed seven forts, utterly routing the defenders. American losses were one killed and four wounded. insurgents lost about forty. Admiral Watson’s message adds Naval Cadet Wood was killed when the gunboat Urdaneta fell to insurgents.
Augurn New York Sept 26 Special A New York Central passenger train collided with a freight train this morning. Three persons were killed and several others wounded in the wreck. Authorities investigated the crash and coordinated emergency response at the scene.
Adam Wirth sold lots 1 and 2 in block 1 Turner's addition to Fred Bickenbaugh for 2300 dollars. A H Wieman of German Valley and F B Walker of Dakota traveled to Springfield today to attend the state air. Miss Bessie M Krape returned to Madison Wisconsin to begin her second year at the state university of Wisconsin.
Freeport camps of Royal Neighbors and Modern Woodmen surprised Julius Waldecker at 91 Homer St. last evening to celebrate his birth anniversary. The gathering featured games and music and culminated with a handsome rocker presented to Mr. Waldecker.
Charles Frisbie of Baileyville drove into town on Stephenson street when the harness neck yoke broke causing the wagon tongue to drop. The team bolted tearing fences and after a mile halted near Capt Young’s place. Frisbie was thrown but escaped with minor bruises. Slim Mavis’ pet coon, missing earlier, was found in the State bank building third story likely by climbing a telephone pole and entering a window.
A cigar shaped vehicle drawn by a white horse and driven by Mr Lineweaver of Saint Elmo Cigar Detroit advertises the White Beauty five cent cigar today. Hardin and Tice will distribute.
S. S. Ryan plans to relocate his shop to 84 Galena Street and will open for business at the new location around Monday.
Marriage license data lists J. E. Parsons of Martintown Wisconsin and Jennie Morton of College Corners with a small amount, Earl T. Springfield Illinois September 25 Threatening weather did not deter 5000 school children from crowding the grounds for opening day of the state fair on children's day with free admission for all pupils. A half hour afternoon rain failed to halt four events. Tonight Springfield glowed with 35 blocks of lights and eight arches as a carnival pageant is set for tomorrow under the Springfield Carnival association.
A tramp set fire to the Sylvester Brierton farm barn in Dixon on September 25, destroying the barn and causing a large loss. Two valuable horses and a mule perished, along with 20 tons of hay, 500 bushels of oats, and all farming implements including a buggy harness plows binder corn harvester. The fire is believed to be arson.
Rock Island Base Ball association leaders M. H. Sexton and L. G. Eddy propose a ten club Illinois league for next season. Potential teams include Rock Island, Rockford, Elgin, Aurora, Joliet, Peoria, Bloomington, Springfield, Danville, and Decatur.
A correction notices that the advertisement for the YMCA entertainment course reserve seats misstated prices. The back of the circulated flyer should read 10 and 20 cents instead of 20 and 30 cents. Pass remains remarkably cheap. Only 800 tickets are available.
Miss Dena Fuls of German Valley and Rev. J G Thricken of Wellsburg Iowa wed at 11 this morning at the Fuls home in German Valley in a pretty ceremony witnessed by relatives. The bride, praised for grace and gifts, will live in Wellsburg with her minister husband. A feast followed and Emma Nobe and Walter Schwarze marry tomorrow at St Josephs. Alice Turneaut and Earl Linsley plan noon vows at the bride’s home in Chicago.
Arrangements are completed for Y M C A night schools starting Monday October 9. A special course aids youths without schooling and classes cover architectural and mechanical drawing bookkeeping and penmanship. Courses suit working young men seeking advancement. open to Y M C A members with low joining cost and minimal class fees. Two exams included. six month term options.

Mrs George W Culp showed remarkable nerve when her buggy team ran wild after her husband briefly left the restaurant in Sterling. She kept the horses calm and, to protect their baby, threw the child to a bystander who caught it safely. The rig stopped without damage.
