At the New York Democratic convention on Sept 17 delegates adopted the Chicago platform. A telegram announced William F. Sheean's resignation to Chairman Jones. Nominees named include John Boyd Thatcher for governor and William Sulzer. Porter for lieutenant governor and Robert O. Titus for judge of the court of appeals. The convention adjourned sine die.
In Bonner Kas Sept 17 two young brothers Hailey Patt aged 4 and Charley Waters aged 8 were found dead in the cellar of Mr Petit. An empty gasoline can lay nearby and their clothing was saturated with oil. No explosion evidence. it is believed fumes caused their deaths.
Gen Carlos Roloff a Cuban leader was arrested in New York on a charge of aiding a filibustering excursion to Cuba. He was arraigned and held on $2500 bail.
Chicago weather forecast for the next twenty four hours calls for fair conditions tonight and Friday. Cooler in the southern portion tonight with variable winds.
Edward Bell or Edward Ivory, the alleged dynamiter, was arrested in Glasgow and arrived in London to face Bow Street Court. Magistrate Vaughn asked for his real name and he replied Edward J. Ivory. He was remanded for one week.
A mob assaulted the Union City jail early today to seize Bill Jones a negro for lynching but the sheriff and nine deputies repelled the raid. Jones killed Marshal Walter during the attack. Closing market quotes followed with grain futures and Union Stock Yards figures for cattle hogs sheep and lambs.
In Saratoga at the Grand Union hotel G Gottfried Walbaum owner of the Saratoga Racing Association bets $100000 against $3500 with bookmaker Gleason on McKinley’s election. Walbaum shouts I bet you $10000 to $3500 that McKinley will win and Gleason accepts with cash and a check.
In Philadelphia at East Baptist church trustees meet Rev O H Woolston declares he would only accept salary in gold if William J Bryan wins the presidency, adding he cannot take the devil's money. Trustees approve the demand and say church bills would be paid in gold if Bryan is victorious, a move with laboring-class impact.
Abe Schwab of Tammany Hall forecasts a 150000 to 200000 New York majority for McKinley and the state ticket. He says Tammany will back their governor candidate but oppose any congressman for free silver, regardless of party. He predicts Senator Hill will likely attend the state convention and endorse sound money, though it may matter little amid prevailing sentiment.
Nearly four thousand iron and steel workers from Pennsylvania visited McKinley in CanTon on September 17. He addressed them at length, signaling strong labor support for the event.
