A historic ad invokes a big fall opening sale with a two day promotion on September 12 and 14. It touts discounts on novelty and black dress goods, velvets, wool fabrics, cotton blankets, comforters, belts, buttons, borders, lace, and hosiery, plus a large stock of cloaks and capes at deeply reduced prices meant to attract shoppers promptly.
Local retailer touts 14 quart galvanized iron pails at 10c, tea steepers at ic each, dinner pails at 25c, tea kettles copper bottom 25c, tin cups 1c, granite pudding pans 2 quarts, tea kettles and pots as low as 25c, and various granite saucepans and coffee pots priced under 50c to 69c.
A merchant advertises a two day sale on flour and dried goods including Jersey Dream flour at 93¢ per sack, Kite Satin Flour at reduced price, Graham Sour 18¢ per 10 lb, corn meal and coffee deals, Wafers and crackers, sardines and mustard, table salt and pepper, Burrell Bros cider vinegar, and more, with sale lasting Saturday and Monday.
The Jo Daviess County Veterans association held its fourteenth annual reunion at Scales Mound with a morning business session attracting 120 veterans. A street parade preceded an address by Rev. Frank M. Bristol of Chicago. Rain disrupted afternoon plans and a death-list resolution for fifteen comrades was adopted. I W Parkinson of Stockton was elected president for the coming year, Stephen Jeffers of Hanover vice president, Thomas Horton of Galena secretary, Stockton chosen as the next reunion site.
At the Boone county fair 6000 to 8000 people attended a joint debate between Democrat C K Ladd of Kewanee and Republican ex Senator Charles E Fuller of Belvidere. Fuller spoke an hour on living political issues while Ladd read from clippings and books favorable to his side and quoted Blaine. Fuller rebutted with statistics on wheat values post 1879 and the audience showed lively enthusiasm.
Major McKinley spoke in Canton Ohio addressing a Vermont delegation. He tied free trade and humanitarian concerns to national morality and honor. He warned against free silver, calling it a moral issue tied to public credit and the nation’s spotless reputation after the Civil War.
Chicago September 11 Special Hanna said Mr. McKinley will not tour the country seeking votes. He will continue to address the people who visit him in Canton, maintaining dignity for the presidency.
Congressman Hitt writes from Rockford Illinois that he is gradually recovering from a cough. He will travel to the Adirondacks and plans to return home October 1 to speak in every county of his district, though health may limit his campaign vigor.
The Rochelle postoffice was looted of $100 in daylight yesterday. Miss Daisy Pool, assistant to the postmaster, was distracted by two well dressed men who talked with her while the other slipped through the money drawer window to take the cash. No clue to the thieves.
Roy Wilkes a fast little pacer owned by J B Gilbert of Sterling collapsed and died in harness after finishing a 2 35 pace heat at Rochelle fair. Gilbert had just refused 5000 dollars for the horse, saying he regarded him as the most promising animal he owned.
Geo L Magill, president of the Avenue Savings Bank which failed earlier, was arrested in Curriaco on September 11 charged with embezzling about $600. He posted bond.
The Bank of Commerce in New Orleans shut its doors today. It had capital of 100000 dollars and, per the latest statement, a surplus of 57000 dollars.
Sept wheat at 57 and 58 for near and deferred months, corn around 20 to 24, oats 15 to 19, pork 5.70, lard 3.20 to 3.40, ribs 3.05 to 3.10. Cattle 3.00 to 4.80, stockers 2.50 to 3.75, cows and bulls 1.25 to 3.60, Texans 2.60 to 3.15. Hogs receipts 22,000, prices 3.10 to 3.45 for light to mixed. sheep 2.00 to 2.90 natives, western 2.25 to 2.85, lambs 2.60 to 3.75.
