Cucaca Sept 10 Special The First Infantry Illinois crack regiment that served at Santiago de Cuba arrived from Camp Wikoff this morning. They were given an ovation by thousands along the route to the Armory.
The empress of Austria was stabbed to death in Geneva by an anarchist named Lucchoni born in Paris. He attacked her as she walked from the Beaurivage hotel toward the steamer landing, stabbed her in the heart, and she died after being taken back to the hotel. The assailant was arrested at once.
In Colorado Springs the conference committee’s agreement assigns Democrats to the governor’s seat and one regent of the state university, Silver Republicans to auditor treasurer and superintendent of public instruction and one regent, with Populists receiving the rest. Delegates may defeat the plan as many oppose it despite Democratic adoption of the report and Charles Thomas’s nomination for governor.
Vienna dispatch reports troops from multiple powers hoisting flags over Candea town halls. Admirals issue an ultimatum to the deputy governor and commandant to lay down all arms by tonight, with warships ready to resume bombardment if not complied.
The September crop report shows a 2.1 percent drop in corn. A dispatch from Ponce Porto Rico reports four yellow fever cases and one death among troops, the first such report there. The 46th Illinois Veteran Volunteer Infantry survivors plan a reunion banquet at the Brewster house on Sept 14 15 with toasts songs and speeches by veterans including Benjamin F Dornblaser John D Crabtree F W Byers S P Schadel Smith D Atkins Benjamin T Bradshaw Charles H Grosvenor Fred Marsh and Thos W Leaning. A long banquet menu lists many dishes and warns offenders will be sent to the guard house. Also notes Galena soldiers dead John Calderwood and Michael Dignan.
Alderman Frank Harris was badly bitten in the hand by a dog this morning. The city scales will be temporarily located on Jackson street at Baier and Ohlendorf's brewery. The Prohibition club will meet Monday at 7:80 PM at the Good Templars hall. Edwin Hall has returned from New York with new dry goods for the Walton Nephews store. A baseball game is set for tomorrow afternoon between Freeport and Sterling with high expectations.

Private William Selb of Company L, Sixth Illinois, has returned home on a thirty days leave after malaria in Porto Rico. He left Brooklyn Aug 20 for Gong Island College Hospital and arrived lighter in weight from 170 to a little over 120 pounds due to hardships and illness. If his company does not return within a month, Selb must report to the nearest military post.
Curoaco dispatch reports a baby girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Guenterman. The Illinois fair weather note mentions a cooler weekend with frost in the north and northerly winds.
A strong matinee crowd attended the Link Vaudeville Co engagement at Germania Hall this afternoon. They close their engagement here this evening with a final program and performance.
J A Clark of Freeport known as the jolly necktie man was in town yesterday. The note hints our boys will soon wear the latest styles and colors.
The Embury Epworth League will give a concert next Tuesday evening at the church. Miss Kraft of Chicago, recently studying music abroad, will assist in the program.
A gathering was held last night at Mrs. Peter Penticoff’s Charles Avenue home to honor her brother W. J. Baymiller of Milwaukee. Guests enjoyed games and refreshments during the event.
Illinois Central supervisor Henry Gale and his family will relocate from this area to Rockford next Tuesday where they will reside in the future. We will miss them and wish them well in their new home.
The Warren High School football team will practice between now and September 28 for their upcoming game with Warren. Captain Martin Sweet leads the team with Edward Sibley as manager. Prof. Livingston, the science teacher, will coach the squad, which is described as strong.
W F Shrouse of Supt Dill's office is seriously ill. Hon Jacob Krohn is confined at home by illness. Ben Watson, brought here from the west by his grandfather Fred Watson, was accidentally shot a year and a half ago. The bullet remained in his body until a few weeks ago when Dr Buckley removed it in a skilled operation, and the boy is now well.
