Jeangeles Cal Sept 1 Ex Governor Samuel Merrill of Iowa died at seventy three after a stroke left him partially paralyzed and a fall months earlier injuring him severely in an electric accident his recovery had seemed possible but ended abruptly at the time of reporting
The Rennes court martial on Captain Dreyfus heard Major Dubreuil defend his honor with new documents while testimony linked to the 1894 degradation surfaced. Lebrun Renault testified Dreyfus said I am innocent and in three years they will recognize my innocence. Witnesses including d Attel and Guerin supported the claim, though notes were destroyed and Fornizetti denounced the alleged confession as a lie. Dreyfus denied uttering the last sentence and claimed he had not spoken in the second room.
The New York Herald reports Key West officially has yellow fever. Two cases are confirmed, Dennis L. Hagan a customs attache and William M. Browder a treasury special agent. A boy named Cosgrove died. Hagan unlikely to survive. Fever cases rise, unacclimated residents consider departure as precautions mount.
President McKinley’s return to Canton for rest brings constant calls from neighbors and old friends. He enjoys chats, aside from a cemetery visit with Mrs. McKinley and a city tour. A flood of telegrams and mail arrived at the Barber residence as he stayed there most of the day.
In Littsburg on September 1 a meeting failed to solidify the National Glass company as an air tight combine of the country’s glass tableware makers. The dispute arose when United States Glass demanded National Glass provide 1,100,000 dollars to cover its preferred stock and accumulated dividends.

A keen Green Jackets officer, he distinguished himself in the Sudan campaign and is noted for his tall, good looks and genial personality.
Minerva Smith of 414 Washington Ave Danville Illinois reports twenty years of bronchial trouble bedfast at times and credits Foley's Honey and Tar with quick relief and cure for throat and lung diseases. The testimonial lists H J Moogh W F Jungkunz Co. as sources.
