Sugar Beets Promising New Cash Crop in Illinois

In Lebanon Illinois on October 26 farmers near O'Fallon conducted a U S Department of Agriculture led test at Urbana. An acre under ordinary cultivation may yield 18 to 20 tons of sugar beets compared with 12 to 14 locally. If sugar content rivals Clinton county 21 16 percent, profits could be substantial and 8400 pounds per acre become plausible. This marks St Clair county’s first scientifically run beet experiment.

Sterling Mayor James F Platt Dies of Heart Disease

James F Platt died suddenly of heart disease at his Sterling home.
