New Bidder Sage Enlists to Settle Union Pacific Debt

Russell Sage announces he is invited by President McKinley to form a syndicate to purchase Union Pacific and settle the federal claim in full. Subscriptions reportedly exceed 75 million dollars within hours, with major sums from Sage himself and partners. Sage plans further calling on unlimited capital to clear Pacific road debts without losses to the government. He goes to Washington to meet the president and attorney general.

Boiler Explodes on Texas Launch At Parade Dock

A boiler blast aboard a steam launch attached to the battleship Texas during a naval parade injures several men. Notable aboard included Lieutenant Commander Delehanty, Lieutenant Bristol, Ensign Wadhams, and Dr. W. R. Dubose. John Fisher and John Phillips suffered injuries. others escaped with minor harms.

Miners Union Officers Accused of Bribery

State President William Carson of O'Fallon and five executive committee members, William Norbury of Troy James Page of Staunton Gus Horn of Glen Carbon and Thomas Simpson of Collinsville, are being tried by a thirty five delegate convention in East St. Louis on charges they accepted bribes of 200 dollars each to end a miners walkout and return to work at a lower wage scale.

Murder at Aurora as husband shoots rival. bystander wounded

Aurora Missouri October 22. Robert Foley was shot and killed by Henry Duncan who accused Foley of an affair with Duncan's wife Mrs. Duncan. Green Lemaster, present on the street, was hit in the chest by buckshot and is dangerously wounded.

Gov Tanner lifts cattle quarantine in Illinois

Governor Tanner issues proclamation allowing cattle from Tennessee and Arkansas north of the quarantine to enter Illinois after November 1 and cattle from any southern state for grazing and feeding after November 15. Renominated President Gates by the American Missionary Association committee, with all officers renominated except one minor exception.
