Six laborers were buried by a mining collapse near Brooklyns collar on Saturday. Three men were recovered dead by press time, with two others unaccounted for as crews comb the rubble.
Items report arrestees and robberies including Sumterville and the Richmond Custom House, a train wreck on the Missouri Pacific near St Joseph killing Henry Cook, bank and insurance suspensions in New Orleans Philadelphia St Louis, and re election of Mr Otera as Congressional Delegate in New Mexico. Also noted are Salt Lake City dates to August 5, Saints resistance, Great Western Railroad sale for 1100 dollars, Iowa bankers shunning New England bills, and Indiana Democrat John Pettit defeated for Lafayette judge by 400 votes.
Galena advertiser reports John Q. Charles aboard the Fred Lorenz brings news of a sweeping Republican victory in Minnesota with St. Paul’s 500 Democratic majority, Stillwater 400 to the Republican side, and the whole Republican State ticket elected. It notes Minnesota likely to join the Union as a solid Republican state and hints Rangess may become Free State.
A major blaze at South Water Street flooded Chicago in early morning hours, devastating a five story brick block and rear marble building on Lake Street. Fire killed several including Liberty Hose foreman John B. Dickey and prominent citizens. total loss estimated 600000 to 800000 dollars, mostly uninsured.
The Exchange Hotel at Columbus burned down by an incendiary fire injuring the property insured for 3060 dollars. The Racine Journal notes a Carlton Hall boarder theft of 46 dollars, with suspects Lewis Burmain and Charley Saupe arrested. Saupe located in Chicago. Portage City reports a completed bridge and a river dredge at work, pledging canal depth restoration. Banks of Madison refuse specie redemption to brewers bankers or carpetbag agents. Brooks Mill house fire destroys clothing. Otis of Lind loses 100 bushels wheat with no insurance. Black bears shot near Ogdensburg. Raincap notes that the Milwaukee and Central Railroad sold 6,091 96-100 acres for 73,218.
Arthur Dawson died in Rock Run township in September after a lingering illness. He was 63 years old and had settled in Stephenson county in 1886. He had lived in the Northwest since 1827, emigrating to the Galena lead mines that year.
